David Shindel was born and raised in the greater Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada. He began learning martial arts in his early twenties for self defense purposes in the arts of Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu, a japanese styled grappling art which focuses on small circle defense and tactics, as well as Kickboxing. Dave studied under Sensei Mostafa Sabeti of Golden Glory Martial Arts and Sensei Farzam Molaei of Ultimate Martial Arts to increase his striking prowess and learned grappling through private lessons. This created a conundrum as Dave found that his love and passion towards striking rivaled that of ground fighting and submissions. Confident in his striking abilities and his ground fighting Dave decided to learn the art of Judo to prepare himself for throws and takedowns; the missing link between striking and ground work. Training under Brian Shipper, he has studied tactical takedowns and transitional groundwork and joint manipulations. Through the arts that Dave has learned he has garnered a general knowledge of the three major components in combat sports: striking, grappling and ground fighting.
David has taught martial arts during the last half decade at Kikara Martial Arts in Port Coquitlam and White Rock, at Triunity Martial Arts Studios in Surrey, Golden Glory Fitness & Martial Arts in White Rock and also privately. He always brings an open mind and encourages having fun in class while developing respect for yourself and your fellow students. Thanks to the teachings of many great instructors, Dave yearns for knowledge and understanding in all disciplines and to be familiar with every art that he encounters. He believes that no martial artist will ever be complete; a simple lesson in humility and respect that David not only teaches but practices.
The creation of Black Belt Fitness & Personal Training stemmed from the desire to teach students for the love of sharing knowledge about martial arts and fitness. David has always believed that passion for life comes from a thirst for knowledge and uses this in his teaching methods. Malleable in his approach and patient in his lessons he strives to make his students the best that they can be.
